Fairy Tale Math

If the three Billy Goats Gruff each cross the bridge four times, how many times if the bridge crossed? Hansel & Gretel divided 24 gingerbread cookies. Suddenly the mean witch grabbed ten of them. How many cookies were left for each child to eat? Measure the ingredients to cook “porridge” for Goldilocks. Follow the Three Bears through the woods and trip-trap over the bridge with the Billy Goats Gruff, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and problem-solving skills.

Marvelous Math

Build a mobile and learn geometry. Use a doughnut to learn measurement. Be introduced to geometric concepts, number and set theory, graphing, and differences between analog and digital measurement. Translate story and word problems into mathematical terms. Discover math concepts through activities that include dominos, puzzles, geo-boards, and connecting cubes. Gain practice using a calculator.

SCIENCE

Kitchen Chemistry

Neophyte chemists use household products to form a foundation for learning about acids, bases, emulsion, catalysts, solutions, and corrosion. Basic chemistry makes magic before your very eyes. In the laboratory, youngsters conduct safe and age appropriate experiments while learning the basics of the Scientific Method.

Physics in Action

Clocks, corkscrews, dentist drills, automobile engines, windmills, bicycle gears, sewing machines – all depend on the principles of physics and six fundamental mechanical devices: lever, wheel, axle, wedge, pulley, and gears. These and other concepts will be explored to help kids understand the fundamental of physics and how it’s applied to our lives.

First Lab Science

A science experiment at every class! How did magnets help Columbus find the way? What keeps your insides inside? Why is summer hotter than winter? Explore the science of foods and nutrition by conducting experiments you can eat. Discover the principle of flotation. Learn about chemical reactions. Learn the basics of the scientific method and have fun exploring a variety of science concepts from biology to chemistry to physics!

Science in Bubbles

Through the fun of making bubbles, students are introduced to concepts of cohesion, molecular structure, surface area, volume, shapes, angles, surface tension, minimum surface, and air pressure. Each class features different experiments or hands-on activities that are fun and engaging for kids!

Bug City

Discover how insects – and other bugs – see, walk, fly, eat, and grow. What are some of the mysterious ways they have to defend themselves? What lights a firefly’s fire? Butterflies, ants, bees and spiders: why are they important to people, plants and other animals? Study little “backyard monsters” under the microscope. Build an ant farm, and watch how they live, work and play.

Animal Adventures

In Animal Adventures, your child will explore the environment to learn all about the beautiful and sometimes strange animals in the world. We’ll also create animal-themed crafts, and read books and play games in to learn about the creatures of planet Earth!

Fantastic Body

Listen to your heartbeat with a stethoscope. See how smoking affects the lungs. Examine the joints, muscles and veins of a chicken. Take your own skin prints. Measure the difference in your pulse rate before and after exercise. Learn what teeth are made of. This primer course involves the fledgling student in activities which introduce the basic facts of the anatomy and chemistry of the body.

The Shark and its Environment

Sea animals that attack others for food are predators. Study these predators of the sea with a focus on the shark. Examine its external anatomy and learn what enables it to be the perfect marine predator. Study the food chain and food web of a marine estuary and discover the relationships among living creatures.

Space Explorers

Is there life on Mars? Each week kids will take an imaginary trip to outer space to learn about the universe beyond our planet! Explore the stars and constellations, learn about NASA, the sun, space travel and more!

SOCIAL STUDIES

You Make History

What would it be like to land with the pilgrims and meet Native Americans at Plymouth Rock? Or march with Martin Luther King Jr. when he said, “I have a dream?” Or sail with Columbus and discover a new land? You’ll reenact these events in history – debate the issues, and find out what might have happened if these things did not happen. You’ll learn through your own role playing that history depends on the people involved. As the great events take place, YOU ARE THERE!

Read the great authors. Explore a variety of literature appropriate to the primary-level child: fables, myths, legends, stories, and poetry. Begin a creative and interactive journey into literature and strengthen reading skills along the way. Crafts, games, and of course books are all part of the fun!

Superhero? Super villain? Dinosaur or funny animal? Create a cartoon character, and write a comic strip. Then draw the comic strip while learning perspective and techniques for word balloons. Create a comic book cover, animation cells, or comic stand-ups.

Are you writing for fun? A future journalist? Would you like to know the secrets of effective writing? In this course, a skilled writer takes you through the creative writing process. Discover the basics of clean, exciting writing – from organizing an outline, through revisions and editing. Then put it to work. Select the topic of your choice, and create your own story.

Reader's Theater

Readers Theater is a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script form. Readers read from a “script” and reading parts are divided among the readers. No memorization, costumes, blocking, or special lighting is needed. Appropriate for students who have started to read and will be able to read a simple script with very few words.

Math Challenges

Explore the many situations you encounter which are rooted in mathematics: time zones, Roman numerals, statistics and probability, optical illusions, patterns and ratios of many kinds, and graphing of data. Learn shortcuts of mental computation utilizing mathematical principles. Probe the uses of educated guesses, and apply logic in everyday problem solving.

Multiply and Divide

Move into 3-step multiplication problems. Learn to do math mentally and find solutions faster. Decode secret messages, when number answers to math problems are letters of the message. Order In the Court

In mock trials, youngsters take the parts of judge, jury, and attorneys. Was Goldilocks guilty of breaking and entering? Did Jack steal from the giant after climbing the beanstalk? Did Hansel and Gretel murder the witch or was it self-defense? Consider those questions and then conduct a trial for a real-life crime. In this introduction to justice and law, students become familiar with evidence and testimony while learning our legal system and the concept of right and wrong.

You’ve seen the popular TV series that has captivated audiences, and now it’s your turn to swim with the sharks! Develop your own business plan and pitch it to the sharks. Learn what it means to operate a business “at scale” and determine the best method to market your business venture in order to grow your business. This is the perfect class for the budding entrepreneur!

Playwriting and Acting I

Bring your dramatic side to center stage. Write your own play and act it out. You’ll first read several plays and see how the professionals do it. Then you’ll study the techniques of staging and stage directions. You’ll learn to block scenes and make characters come alive with imaginative dialogue. You and your co-authors, finally, will write and perform your own masterpieces.

Theater Workshop

In an informal classroom setting, learn the skills of the theater: acting, directing, stage managing, and producing a play. Working as a team, the cast and troupe will learn all aspects of the theater through the rehearsal process to curtain call. The group will work with a script of a previously produced theater presentation.

Public Speaking and Debate

Debate the controversial issues of today. Persuade your listeners. Learn to feel confident and poised in front of groups. Gain skills in delivery and preparation techniques as you write and present short speeches. Work with concepts of theme and counter theme, rebuttal, and persuasion. Use media sources, apply research skills, organize ideas based on supporting facts, and present your ideas convincingly.

Grade Level 4-6

MATH

What is X?

This pre-algebra course introduces the concepts of variables. Students will learn they can attack quantitative problems through writing and evaluating expressions and equations. Youngsters will find solution sets for equations in two variables. Algebraic concepts will be visualized through graphing solution sets on coordinate axes. Topics for discussion will include prime and negative numbers and number theory concepts, as well as algebraic structures.

Number Tricks and Probability

Reasoning and number tricks are one aspect of this course. Probability (the measure of chance) is another. Graphing and logging the results of experiments helps students “see” math concepts and understand quadrants. A strong number sense is developed through the discovery of the designs in numbers. Students must bring their own calculators.

Advanced Math Concepts and Computation

Learn the principles of probability and statistics as well as coordinate and transformation geometry. Course content includes three types of averages (mean, median, and mode), coordinate plane-mapping functions, data analysis, and different types of graphs and patterns. Examine the structure of numbers and concepts about whole numbers. You’ll be intrigued by the curious patterns that prevail! Areas of this course are encountered are encountered in a range of standardized tests.

Algeo

Develop an aptitude for solving unfamiliar problems. Discover, learn, and then apply geometry. Make connections between concrete, real-life examples and abstract concepts. Gain an appreciation for how often geometry is used in ways that relate directly to our lives.

Mathematical Structures

Build conceptual understanding of the principles needed for the study of higher math. This course introduces basic algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry, as well as computer science. Topics to be covered include numeration systems and number bases, rational numbers and sequences, mathematical systems, functions and graph theory.

This course introduces the emergent designer/mathematician to the underlying concepts of geometry. Measure shapes using formulas. Learn the relationships that always exist between certain shapes. Translate date into graphs drawn in four parts. Course content includes the mysteries of negative numbers, signed numbers, variables, squaring, square root, and solving equations. Also, learn to solve basic geometry problems using algebra.

Project Discovery/STEM Design Challenge

Students will be inspired to utilize innovative approaches to fundamental skills through a design challenge. Project Discovery encourages teams of learners to take risks, focus, frame challenges, and have fun while incorporating STEM. Students are given a set of materials to work with and are tasked with developing a plan to use the materials and work as a team to accomplish the initiative at hand.

Laboratory Science

Experience science through hands-on laboratory activities. Survey biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and space science through personal experimentation. Build balloon, explore the wonders of absolute zero, spectroscopy, and a dazzling array of experiments that open doors to the physical sciences. Dissection and bacterial cultures introduce biological sciences.

Chemistry

A first look at chemistry as a laboratory science, this course includes experiments with such topics as: solutions, chemical formulas, acids and bases, periodic elements and properties, chromatography, kinetic molecular theory, Bohr model, chemical equilibrium, and organic chemistry. Students also explore such current topics in chemistry like DNA cloning and medicinal chemistry.

The Human Body

Explore the anatomy, physiology, and chemistry of the body. In this introductory course, students become aware of themselves from the inside out. Study the structure and function of the major systems that keep the body alive.

Science-Math Connection

Experiment, analyze, calculate. Incorporate math in physics, chemistry, biology, and genetics. Use a centrifuge to separate substances by density, then weigh the different layers. Plot a growth curve graph that shows the effects of light, water, and fertilizer on plant organisms. Dissect an organism and measure the parts. Study population growth and watch the strongest survive. Plot results with M&M’s. Conduct other experiments and math-related scientific studies.

Run for Office

Set up your own campaign headquarters and find out what it really takes to be a politician in America. Follow the 2012 Presidential Election to go inside the system in this course and see that political decisions are often a combination of ideals, ideas, financial contributions, lobbying…and compromise, compromise, compromise! After this course, you’ll be better equipped to play a role in future elections for the candidate of your choice, run for class officer next year…or President of the United States in 2032!

The News 24/7

Can you cover a major news event in two minutes? Use your writing skills to produce hard-hitting newscasts for live presentations to a “studio audience”. Zero in on key points. Screen out details you do not need. Trim it down to a news brief. Write about actual current events, sports, weather and entertainment, for broadcast delivery or newspaper use. As a reporter or editor, you will learn to apply elements of news, the “inverted pyramid” principle, the “Six W’s” and headline writing.

Inventions That Changed The World

Throughout history, people have imagined and then created new things to make their lives better, easier, and more enjoyable. From the wheel to penicillin to the computer, inventions continue to change the way we live. This class introduces students to the amazing world of inventions — they’ll learn about famous inventors, explore everyday inventions, discuss the “Top 10” inventions of all time, and even imagine a new invention for the 21st century.

Roosevelt, the President who led America through the Great Depression? You’ll re-enact these great events in history – debate the issues – and find out what might have happened if these things did not happen. Inside The Newsroom

Go inside the newsroom and create a newspaper. Begin by examining the various sections of real newspapers…local and world news, political cartoons, editorials, sports, and retail and classified ads. From there, students will be charged with the responsibility of compiling their own newspapers, covering those same sections. When writing about local and world news, learn how to write in a clear and concise manner, focusing on the “Six W’s” and headline writing. In writing editorials, focus on the same persuasive writing skills that are incorporated into standardized tests. When constructing ads, students will consider the ingredients of something that will capture the attention of their targeted audience.

Students learn about dispute and resolution under the law, with decisions based on facts and logic instead of bias and emotion.

Comic Book Narrative

Tell a story through comic book illustrations. What sequence of pictures do you need to narrate the plot? Write your story and create a storyboard. Plan the series of drawings you will need to tell the story and develop characterization. Start your scene with full-figure long shots and follow with close-up panels that zoom in on characters’ expressions and emotions.

Read, Write, Illustrate

Bring in a favorite story you’ve read or written. “Tell” the story – through writing and illustration. Pull out the main point, plot, and characters. Your adjectives will come to life as you compliment your words with illustrations. Students will be taught how to organize their ideas in sequence – and get them on paper!

Let's Write

Creativity plus learned skills equals “gifted and talented writing”. The goal of this course is to blend students’ spontaneity and fluency with the rules and tools of writing. Students are trained to use details, well-developed paragraphs and logical sequence in exposition, descriptive, and narrative writing. With the use of picture prompts as stimuli to writing, students are sure to improve upon a valuable skill that can be utilized on standardized tests.
